The last 1 week will be memorable for G4S a courier company that acts as a post office. G4s are the prefferd means used by teachers across Kenya who have quit the former giant UNION KNUT.
In Kericho for example it costs 400 shillings to deliver any parcel of less than 500 grams to Nairobi. At first, over 2000 teachers quiting KNUT each sent their letter weighing 25 grams individually, until late yesterday when they started collecting letters, putting in box yo ensure they weighed 500 grams and later dispatching to Nairobi. By yesterday TSC had received over 20,000 letters from teachers who are seeking to be Unionless.
Kakamega and Kisumu it costs 527 to send a similar letter. Reason teachers prefer this means is because they are sure it will reach TSC and the commission cannot claim that the letter did not reach.
WHY TEACHERS ARE QUITTING IN LARGE NUMBERS
1. Sossion. They believe Sossion the KNUT SG has failed to get a working formula with TSC their employer. They blame him for bad leadership, too much noise and little ability to save their plight.
2. CBA. Knut members were left out of the latest CBA increments and promotions. TSC says, KNUT went to court and obtained orders that removed them from CBA benefits.
An ATTEMPT BY COTU SG TO SAVE KNUT FAILED
The highly publicised meeting called by the COTU SG Atwoli to save KNUT from collapse flopped, with both TSC and labour ministry ignoring him. Teachers especially in primary schools have been left with one option. Choose between being in a dead KNUT or keep their employment under TSC.
Only a foolish teacher It would be naive to remain in KNUT, be deducted 2% and miss their promotions.
CONCLUSION
For many of us who loved KNUT… it is a very sad time. Very sad to see the thing die. And to teachers, we must regroup and think of forming another strong union. The worst thing ever is to remain Unionless. Once KNUT AND Sossion go, then we must regroup and form a union.
