John Matiang’i, the brother of Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, on Thursday, April 29, announced his decision to step down as the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) national treasurer.

Matiang’i, a fearless defender of teachers rights, stated that he wanted more time to focus on his studies at the University of Nairobi.

John Matiang’i is not an angel. But my brief time that I worked under him, I can say without any measure of doubt, that John is an asset.

Matiang’i, brought order into KNUT Headoffice. His innovations and hardwork that paid can be seen if you visit KNUT offices. Unfortunately for John, he came to KNUT at a time when bottle neck, petty politicking and Politics of betrayal had creeped into the union.

His worst time came as Oyuu the acting National chairman was elected as 2NVC. Matiang’i had been opposed to Oyuu taking a seat of chair that was meant for Central region. In a steering COMMITEE meeting, (minutes can be availed) John told Oyuu to stick to his lane which was at the time ASSISTANT General Secretary. Oyuu refused and promised to teach Matiang’i a lesson. Little did we know the lesson will be back stabbing, gossiping, leaking info and betrayal. All the MAPINDUZI attempts in KNUT have been orchestrated by Oyuu either by being directly involved and then pulling back or by financial aid.

But what has angered NT most is Oyuu taking him to Siaya county to meet delegates, in early April 2021. While there Oyuu declared his candidature to fight Sossion. But not just that. Oyuu introduced James NDIKU the Deputy N. Treasurer and declared that NDIKU will opose Matiang’i for seat of NT.

Simply, these are members of a steering COMMITEE, fighting each other in public. People who were supposed to jell in their offices and come out speaking in one voice. It also leads to more questions.. like… How were these people leading a union like KNUT? A CHAIRMAN who is a signatory to knut ACCOUNTS, fighting his Treasurer and secretary!! No wonder KNUT is dying.

From their own wards Oyuu has sponsored hate bloggers to fight and even handpicked Nyamwanda, a Kisii OFFICIAL to fight Matiang’i.

Unknown to many, John Matiang’i has been for most of the time the last two years; writing his PHD thesis from hospital rooms in Kenya and India while nursing his wife. The INSULTS from Oyuu and his BLOGGERS are affecting the family and especially the patient. Imagine being in hospital and everyday you see your colleague at work insulting you via paid bloggers online.

The soft-spoken leader joined KNUT in 2008 in the position of Branch Executive Secretary. After six years, he became the National Treasurer of the union, a position which he has held to date.

Previously, he worked as a teacher under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for 14 years, from 1990-2000.

He is a graduate of the University of Nairobi where he studied Kiswahili and Geography after which he joined the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, for a Masters degree in Education Administration in 2010-2013.

He completed his education with a PhD at the University of Nairobi where he became a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration.

Last year, Matiang’i was gazetted by the Treasury CS Ukur Yattani to serve as a member of the Public Service Superannuation Fund Board of Trustees.

He is mandated to provide retirement benefits to persons in the public service.

The name Matiang’i is not the type of name to be rubbished daily over a post of NT in KNUT. SURELY, If Oyuu wants to own KNUT so badly, let him have mercy on his colleagues.

  1. If he graduated with a PhD, how then does he want to concentrate on his studies? Is it 14 years from 1990 to 2000? Which position is senior, 2nd Vice Chair or Deputy SG? Something is wrong with the writer.
